Senior Executive Appointments

Overall, the senior ($250,000+) market was weaker than expected in FY 21/22. This is because in July 2021 we entered another lockdown which was then followed by the omicron infection in November, the Ukraine war, floods, federal election and jitters about the economy. All good reasons for corporate Australia to delay senior level appointments or simply promote people internally. Looking forward, we expect market conditions to improve slowly from August/September 2022 onwards as both corporates and the candidate market gain confidence and push ahead with long held plans to hire or make a career move.

We recruit roles at GM/MD level and Chief Customer, Marketing, Digital or Sales Officer levels. Across all sectors, there have been a relatively low number of new appointments made at these levels but the market has certainly not stopped. There is a high number of good calibre candidates wanting to make a career mover in the next 12 months, having effectively had their career plans on hold since March 2020.

Hiring In The Current Market

Your Recruitment Process is your Employment Brand

When all is said and done about being an employer of choice the rubber hits the road in the recruitment process for the employment brand experience. All too often we see organisations spend a fortune on these concepts only to lose great candidates because they cannot run a slick, punchy recruitment process on time. Recruitment is a simple, project management exercise, it should be managed as such.

Focus on Calibre and Ability to Grow

The biggest frustration of recruiting in Australia is the inherent conservative nature of the hiring market. By this I mean a hiring manager wants a shortlist made up of identically qualified/experienced candidates, from their industry “because our industry is too complicated and it will take too long to learn”. Whilst in some roles this is clearly the case, most of the time it is not. In this challenging market we advise clients to focus on recruiting high calibre people with a demonstrable ability to grow as individuals rather than specific industry or technical skills.

Mid to Senior Level $150,000 - $250,000

This salary band has seen a good level of hiring at the lower level with market activity reducing further up the scale, essentially for the same reasons as above. Across all sectors, hot skills have been in digital, data and sales experts. Corporates have high expectations in terms of skill level and candidates, thanks to the high demand candidates have high expectations around base salary, flexibility and benefits. In some areas of digital and data we have seen salary increases of 10-20% depending on industry sector. Digital Product Managers and sales experts in technology or FMCG/consumer goods have also enjoyed increases of 5-10% on base in some cases.
